Bayern Munich travel to Japan for a potentially lucrative match against Urawa Red Diamonds.

Two clubs at the top of their domestic leagues will battle it out when newly promoted J League runners-up Urawa Red Diamonds come up against last season’s Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Japan’s best supported side will be eager to prove they can compete amongst Germany’s elite, but will find it tough going against a side that boasts so many internationals stars and such a strong tradition of victory.

Bayern Munich, Germany’s most successful football club, with 20 Bundesliga titles and 14 Cups, is also one of Europe’s biggest sides, having won four European Championships. While Bayern has remained dominant in domestic competition, with seven league titles and six Cups in the last decade, their European form has dwindled in the last few years, and they have not tasted such glory since 2001.

This year holds some very exciting possibilities for the club’s fans, though, as the side continues to grow in confidence and its younger stars reach their prime. One such star is Euro 2008 hero Bastian Sweinsteiger, who went from being a peripheral player to the main attraction of the national team over the course of the tournament. Despite rumours of a move, the young forward has made his intentions clear and is determined to stay with the club.

This can only be great news as his chemistry with fellow young international teammates Lukas Podolski and Philipp Lahm has been most impressive. Perhaps a resounding victory over their Japanese opposition could spark the confidence the team needs to reclaim the European Cup this coming season.
