Arsenal visit Underhill where they will take on Barnet, most likely to give a number of fringe players a run out to try and impress manager Arsene Wenger.

Premiership giants Arsenal will play Football League minnows Barnet in a friendly match that should be more of an exhibition than a closely contested fight between two clubs of equal stature.

Barnet is a club with a long and controversial history, including a time in the 1992-1993 season in which the club faced expulsion from the English FA after failing to pay players’ wages. The club currently plays in Football League Two, the lowest flight of the football league, and finished 12th last season after an inconsistent display.

They started in very poor fashion, but went on a 10-game unbeaten run which made them possible playoff contenders. Unfortunately, another run of poor form saw them finish the season in disappointing fashion. The Hillmen did not have much better luck in Cup competitions either, with early exits in the FA Cup, League Cup as well as the Football League Trophy. Few will give them a chance against a powerful side such as Arsenal, with so much success and European experience, but Barnet will be eager to prove they can compete at the highest levels.

Arsenal, by their standards, also had a disappointing season. With a blistering start to the Premiership, Arsene Wenger’s strategy of building up a young team seemed to be in fruition, as the club went on to end 2007 in 1st place.

A string of draws and lackluster performances dropped their confidence, however, and the Gunners finished with a number of poor matches, seeing them finish in third position behind Chelsea and Manchester United. They will be looking to get their season to a good start with a convincing victory over a much less experienced team.
